C.H.I.L.D. Protocol® Framework

Developmental Observation Framework

From Observation to Informed Developmental Decisions

Observation is more than watching children—it is understanding what their actions and interactions reveal about development.

The C.H.I.L.D. Protocol™ Observation Framework is an evidence-informed methodology that transforms everyday observations into meaningful developmental insights. Rather than relying on isolated behaviors or subjective impressions, the framework provides a structured process for analyzing development, considering context, and guiding informed decisions that support each child’s unique developmental journey.

The Developmental Observation Process

The framework follows a seven-step process:

01. Observation

What do I see the child doing?
Collect objective observations of children’s actions, behaviors, and interactions within their natural environments.

2. Developmental Analysis

What is happenng developmentally?
Analyze observed behaviors across the six developmental domains using the C.H.I.L.D. Protocol™ Developmental Scales, including the Neurodevelopmental Regulation Index (NRI) and Serve & Return Index (SRI).

3. Interpretation

What might this action mean?
Identify developmental patterns, strengths, emerging skills, and potential areas of concern.

4. Context Review

What is the context surrounding this child right now?
Consider environmental, relational, cultural, and individual factors that may influence development and observed behaviors.

5. Developmental Trigger Analysis

What might be triggering or contributing to this behavior?
Determine whether observations indicate developmental strengths, emerging needs, monitoring, or the need for additional evaluation or support.

6. Decision Making

What is the most supportive and developmentally appropriate response?
Use evidence-informed decision pathways to guide individualized developmental planning.
7. Communication and Action
How will I communicate and what actions will I take?
Communicate findings clearly and collaboratively with families and professionals and develop appropriate recommendations and next steps.
