C.H.I.L.D. Protocol™ stands for Child Holistic Individualized Lifelong Development Protocol. It is a platform where the science of neuropsychology meets the art of child development assessment. The core of the platform is the C.H.I.L.D. Protocol™ Scales, which are a collection of 23 interdisciplinary developmental scales designed for children from birth to 7 years of age. These scales help assess key areas of child development, including Neurophysiological, Sensoriperception, Psychomotricity, Communication, Cognitive, and Socio-emotional aspects.

It is crucial to understand that C.H.I.L.D. Protocol™ is not intended to be used as a diagnostic tool.
The web-based platform was developed in 2022 by Telma Ferraccioli Marques, M.A., who has a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in child development (0-7), specializing in Neuropsychology and Child Abuse and Neglect. She is the author of the Child Healthy Development Protocol 0-7© (2016) and co-author of 21 Interdisciplinary Scales of Development for children ages birth to 7 (Portuguese edition). To ensure accurate tracking of a child’s development and provide timely support when needed, we recommend completing the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ at regular intervals based on the child’s age. The recommended schedule is:

  • First year (0–12 months): Monthly assessments: This is a period of rapid growth and change. Monthly check-ins help closely monitor developmental milestones during this critical time.
  • Second year (13–24 months): Every 3 months: Development remains dynamic. Quarterly assessments help capture key progress in mobility, communication, and early cognition.
  • Third and fourth years (25–48 months): Every 6 months: As development begins to stabilize, semiannual assessments provide a balanced view of evolving skills and behaviors.
  • Fifth and sixth years (49–72 months): Once a year: Annual assessments during this stage help track readiness for school and continuing growth in all key areas.

By following this schedule, parents and professionals can work together to support the child’s healthy and holistic development over time.

Reassessment Timing:
The best timeframe for rescreening depends on the child’s age and the nature of the concerns. In general:

  • If the child is under 3 years old, reassessment is recommended within 4–8 weeks of the initial screening when concerns are noted.
  • For children over 3 years old, every 3–6 months is often appropriate, unless significant delays are present—then closer monitoring may be advised.

Which questionnaire to use:

  • Use the same age interval questionnaire if the child is still within the same age bracket and milestones were not yet acquired. This allows you to monitor progress on the specific skills that have not yet developed.
  • If the child has aged into a new interval, you may advance to the next age-based questionnaire if most prior milestones were achieved and the child is developing steadily.
  • If key milestones from a previous interval are still unmet, it is recommended to continue using or revisit the earlier questionnaire to focus on areas where support is still needed. This helps prevent gaps in foundational skills and ensures accurate developmental tracking.

In short:

  • Repeat the same interval if the child needs more time.
  • Advance if the child is progressing well.
  • Go back when foundational milestones have not yet been met.
    • This flexible approach ensures that each child is assessed according to their unique developmental path—not just their chronological age—supporting timely interventions and meaningful progress.

The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ is designed to be accessible to families and professionals across diverse communities. Here’s what’s currently available:

    • Paper Version:
      • Available now in English
      • Portuguese and Spanish versions are coming soon
    • Digital Version (Online Platform):
      • Available in English, Portuguese, and Spanish

Yes, the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ can and should still be completed, even if a child is already receiving early intervention or specialized services. Here’s why:

    • Holistic developmental profile:
The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ offers a comprehensive view of the child’s developmental strengths and emerging competencies across multiple domains—not just areas of delay or concern.
    • Support beyond diagnosis:
For children with diagnosed disabilities or developmental differences, the protocol helps families and professionals focus on what the child can do, not just on challenges. This can enhance individualized planning and communication among care teams.
    • Considerations when interpreting scores:
It’s important to note that children with disabilities may often score below the cutoff points established by the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™, which are based on typical developmental norms.
In such cases, we recommend using the tool to:
      • Document progress over time, regardless of how scores compare to norms
      • Highlight strengths and functional skills rather than emphasizing delays
      • Guide individualized strategies for learning, participation, and support

    Key takeaway:
For children with identified needs, the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ is best used as a strengths-based, observational tool—not as a diagnostic comparison to typical development. It can enhance understanding, inform interventions, and empower caregivers with a broader view of the child’s growth.

The protocol gives parents and professionals a complete picture of the child’s development, including their strengths, abilities, and areas where support may still be needed. It’s not just about identifying concerns—it’s also about recognizing and building on what the child can already do.

    Important considerations:

    • Children with developmental delays or disabilities may often score below the typical cutoff points, which are based on what most children their age can do.
    • In these cases, the assessment should be used not to compare the child to the general population, but instead to:
      • Highlight the child’s unique strengths
      • Track progress over time
      • Support goal setting and personalized strategies at home, school, or interventions.

The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ can be a valuable tool for families and professionals to work together in understanding and supporting the child’s growth—not just to identify delays, but to celebrate achievements and guide everyday interactions.

Integration of the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ into your classroom or clinical workflow can enhance developmental monitoring and communication. While full EHR system integration features are currently under development, here are several ways you can begin integrating the tool today:

    1. Use digital reports for documentation
The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ generates digital summary reports that can be:

      • Saved as PDFs
      • Uploaded into your EHR system or student record platform
      • Shared with families, teachers, or healthcare providers for collaborative planning
    2. Manual data entry
If your system allows custom fields or notes, key information from the C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™—such as milestone status, strengths, and areas needing support—can be manually added to the child’s file.
    3. Link to developmental goals
Use the protocol results to align with IEP/IFSP goals, classroom observations, or clinical care plans. This helps ensure that interventions are developmentally appropriate and evidence-informed.
    4. Secure storage and sharing
Until direct integration becomes available, results should be securely stored and shared through your existing systems, following HIPAA or FERPA compliance guidelines, as applicable.

    Future Update:
We are working toward features that will allow for direct syncing with popular EHR and education record systems and automated tracking over time for individual children and group cohorts.

    Need support?
If your school, clinic, or organization is interested in integration tools or API access, please contact our team for implementation guidance and customization options.

The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ is a comprehensive developmental screening and observational tool, designed to provide a whole-child profile across multiple domains, including:

    • Neurophysiological development
    • Sensoriperceptive skills
    • Psychomotor abilities (gross and fine motor)
    • Communication (receptive and expressive language)
    • Cognitive functioning
    • Socioemotional development

However, it is not a specialized or diagnostic tool for identifying specific conditions such as:

    • Speech and language disorders
    • Behavioral or emotional disorders
    • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

    What it can do:

    • Help identify potential areas of concern across domains that may warrant closer monitoring or referral.
    • Offer a broad view of strengths and challenges that can inform intervention planning and communication among professionals and caregivers.
    • Support referrals to specialists by providing structured, observational data that complements more specific diagnostic tools.

    What it cannot do:

    • It is not intended to replace standardized assessments used by speech-language pathologists, psychologists, developmental pediatricians, or other specialists.
    • It should not be used as a standalone autism screener (e.g., M-CHAT, ADOS), nor for diagnosing speech, language, or behavioral disorders.

    In summary:
The C.H.I.L.D. PROTOCOL™ is best used as a foundational screening and monitoring tool, offering a clear picture of a child’s development over time. If it reveals concerns in areas such as communication, behavior, or social interaction, it can guide you in seeking more targeted evaluations by licensed professionals using specialized tools.
